As a Dealer and Gunsmith, I can tell you the best gun for your money would be the Remington 870 Express 12 gauge Pump Shotgun. They can be purchased for just around $300 and are one of the BEST all purpose Shoguns on the market today. I sell these at a rate of 8-1 over other brands. They are quality built and manufactured, totally reliable and are available in many varieties for "Specialty" Shooting/Hunting needs, from Rifled Slug & Sabot Deer Barrel Models to Special Turkey Choked,Camo Models...You could easily afford either of these on your budget but you will have a hard time making one barrel do both Deer hunting and Turkey hunting, and so you might need to purchase and extra interchangable barrel to suit your needs. I would also recommend you look at the Mossberg Model 500 Shotgun line simply because they are a less expensive "cloned" copy of the Remington 870 Express, just a cheaper version. Even if it required you to go a few dollars over your budget, I would spend the extra cash and get the Remington 870 Express instead. The Remington 870 is the currently the #1 Law Enforcement Shotgun used in the U.S. That speaks volumes for reliability and performance.

Do yourself a big favor and shop around. Look at both the Remington and the Mossberg and handle BOTH at your local Distributor or Gun Shop BEFORE you buy. Ask questions and educate yourself and you will see first hand what I am talking about here. Good luck with what ever you decide or choose!

You can get a Mossberg 500 at Dick's Sporting Goods this week for $250 and it comes with a slug barrel for deer hunting and a bird barrel with a modified choke which you could upgrade for turking hunting.
Good luck.

Rem 870 combo for under 400 bucks is a good start. It comes with a regular 28" smoothbore for shot, and a 20" rifled barrel for slugs. Changing the barrels is easy, you get 2 guns for the price of one.

Remington 870 pump action, with 3" chamber are often found on sale for around 200 (they also will shoot the standard 2 3/4 shells) .
I shot one for years. It is the most popular and reliable shootgun out there.

Remington 870 Express. As long as you stay faithful to the shotgun, the Remington will be a keeper. Mossbergs and Mavericks come and go like the wind but Remingtons tend to stay in posession until someone just does not want to hunt or shoot shotguns anymore.

Forget using 2 barrels, changing barrels etc. Why mess around? Get a Remington SPR220 Hinge Action cowboy shotgun. It is fixed choke and can shoot either birdshot for turkey or slugs for deer, without messing around with changing barrels. They are under $300 as well.
