i am a vet tech and i dont know why your vet didnt give him an enema... that is the first thing that we do when an animal is brought in with constipation. the constipation can be one of the causes of the vomitting. it can set off a chain of things right after another causing your dog to feel bad. i have a golden retriever too and she gets constipated all the time due to her long hair. when they clean themselves up it forms a "plug" ... its kinda gross i know... they have something called laxitone that you can buy over the counter at the vets office and you should give about a quarter sized amount every day to help him digest the hairballs. untill then you should ask your vet about giving your dog an enema... if he wont do it then get a second opinion from another dr. ive had to give one to my dog a couple of times and within 5 min she is much better.... since ive started the laxatone she hasnt had a problem... and even though he keeps vomiting make sure he drinks water and lots of it... im sorry your going throught this....i see you have chicken and rice... try plain yogurt as well ... see if he will eat that... he is probably too stopped up to eat and as soon as you get that taken care of im sure his appetite will improve... constipation is a seriouse thing after a certain amount of time and should be taken care of asap... good luck and i hope all goes well and he gets feeling better soon :(

I will give you the same answer that I have to everyone else that has medical issues with any pet.
What would you be doing if you were suffering from this? So you are vomiting and constipated and might have a blockage (what vet can't diagnose a blockage by the way and just sends you home without instructions about when you should get back to the vet??!!). So you go home, take your meds and feel worse and continue vomiting for FOUR days. At what point would you go BACK to the doctor? If the answer is - you wouldn't - you would stay home and continue to vomit and not be able to eat and be constipated for 4 days, then I guess you aren't doing anything wrong.
But something tells me that you would have gotten your sick butt back to the doctor days ago. Probably the DAY after things hadn't improved.
Do the same thing for your dog. He doesn't ahve the ability to call and drive himself to the doctor himself. He needs you to do that for him
If he has an intestinal blockage right now his intestines are rotting in their own sepsis. If you don't get him to the vet today, he might not have any intestines left to save which means you will have to euthanize him because you weren't willing to take him to a vet to determine what is really wrong with him.
Now - as to the vet - find a new one. No responsible vet would send a dog home if he might have had a blockage. At least not without very strict instructions - something like - if he still isn't better tomorrow - bring him back immediately.
One final note - what's up with a dog that has already been diagnosed with hip dysplasia at the age of 1? Where did you get him? Who is the breeder? That breeder should be called out as one who is not breeding responsibly and should not be breeding dogs- never get another dog from that breeder again.

This dog needs to get back to the vet as soon as possible. This is not a problem anyone can give you an answer to in this forum. These symptoms are severe and indicate a serious health issue, not something you should be trying to treat at home. A year old golden that needs fluids syringed to him is crashing. Sounds like a foreign body, from what you've described, and since he's at an age where they like to eat everything, it's a definite possibility. If you haven't taken him back to the vet because you can't afford it, try calling your local humane society and seeing if they can give you some help, or point you in the right direction. One thing you do not want to be doing is giving this dog a bunch of over-the-counter medication that may cause more serious issues. The problems you are describing would not be caused by the aspirin.

You need a new vet and asap. The only safe human medications for animals are Benadryll and Imodium AD. Things such as pepcid AC can contribute to liver dysfunction and Asprin can strip the stomach linning and eventually cause ulcers. Right now stick to feeding him only bland food such as boiled chicken or turkey with boiled carrots and potatos. Make sure he is getting plenty of water to prevent dehydration. Pedialite contains too high of sugar content for a dog of any breed and can lead to other problems. It sounds as though he has a stomach obstruction and not just constipation. With a stomach obstruction it could cause an infection which leads to other problems. It would also encourage vomiting since the food has nowhere else to go. You really do need to see another vet who knows what they are doing.

Constipation and vomitting does not go together unless there is a blockage. If the dog has a blockage it's obviously not going to move on it's own. He needs to see a vet and no doubt will need surgery. Without it your dog may well die. No let me correct that. Your dog WILL die!
The blockage is no doubt causing the vomiting. If he can;t defecate he will vomit instead. He will eventually become very dehydrated even if he is drinking.
I am very concerned for your dog. I would get him to a different vet and get x-rays done to see if there is a blockage. You may have to have more invasive testing done with a camera placed inside to see what is going on. Whatever needs to be done has to be done. If there is a blockage they will have to surgically remove it. It's going nowhere on it's own.
I honestly think the first vet should have said come back the next day if things were no different and not just say to give OTC human medications. I really would never be taking my dog to him again.
Please get him to a vet before it's too late. I'll be saying a prayer for him.

I would really go to the Vet. We had a dog that was constipated years ago. The Vet told me to give it a suppository and how much. But, you need your Vet to tell you not me. I thinking we gave another dog with hip problems a ½ Tylenol. But, again, you really need to verify this with your Vet. We have a lot of animals and giving things over the years I get confused on who got what and how much.
Example; Usually I just call the Vet and ask; "What did you tell me to give that dog for constipation?"

Get him to a new vet. If you can find one with an emergency room, get him there RIGHT NOW. He is not at all well, I'm sure you can see that. 4 days is a long time to go without food, and he is not getting much water either because he is throwing up so much. This happened to my dog, and it turned out she had been bitten by a snake without us realising. We took her to the vet after only one day but even then she had to be hospitalised on an IV drip for a few days. I'm not saying your dog has been bitten by a snake, but I'm saying he's definitely in a very serious condition and needs to be looked at by a doctor now.
I will also warn you never to trust anyone on Yahoo! Answers who prescribes medication for yourself or your pets. It's just common sense, there is no proof of medical training over the internet and medicating wrongly or unnecessarily can have fatal effects.

if he is blocked that is why he is vomiting. the food has to come out somewhere. he needs to have the blockage removed or he could get full of infection and die very soon. he is probably in a lot of pain so take him back to the vet or seek help from a vet hospital. pepto bismal will help with the vomiting but it is also stops the bowel from moving so get him to the doc fast. hope he gets better.

Go to another vet IMMEDIATELY. You dog cannot survive this illness without help and the clock is ticking. You cannot sit around and ask people in here. They cannot give medications, prescriptions or anything more than guesswork.
GO to another vet. The first one passed you off. Your dog is paying the price for indifference. If he get dehydrated things will go badly wrong and you will not hace a doggie. NOW!!!

The best thing to do, is to call your vet and tell him, if the Pepcid isn't helping and ask them if they can give him something, that would be more effective. I would never give my dogs any kind of human meds, unless directed to do so by a vet. It's too risky!
