Mites look like dark brown coffee grounds and itch a lot! In a real bad infestation the mites will just go hang out outside and around the ear until liquid medication is no longer potent. This is why they are hard to get rid of if you are not diligent in following instructions. That being said I use Mita-Clear ordered from PetMeds, around $15. The vet has a shot that will be less trouble and of course more money. It's up to you to make the best choice for your situation, but if you can afford it, take your pet to the vet. There are low cost vet just do a search on-line for your area. Good Luck!

It doesn't matter if the animal is an indoor and outdoor pet, they can still have ear mites. Interestingly enough, a lot of cats are born with it. I was told by my vet that if the mother cat has them, usually the kittens will too. There are some over the counter drops you can buy from the local pet store, but it's better to go the vet. It's not that much money and it'll clear up the problem in no time. Here is a site with all the info. you need: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_ear_mites.html

Before trying to treat it at home and waste a lot of money, take her to the vet, it is more likely an ear infection or allergies, in that case the ear mite medicine won't do any good. You need to know what you are treating before you start any medicine.

...doesnt matter....take her to the vet.....If its not mites...you dont want to just put any old stuff from pet store in her ears, you could do more damage than good.
If you really think its mites,....there are some products out there that work, but you have to use properly, ...dont get anything by hartz at all. if you have a "pet lovers" or pet smart near you...look for the "natural" ear mite products...and they're not all that much, ...under 10 dollars.
thanks too, for being a good pet owner and keeping cat indoors!! i've been rescuing for 25 years, ...and i wish more people had your common sense.

They can be tracked in on shoes, then picked up by the cat from your carpeting. There are over the counter mite medications that you can purchase for under $10, but you may want to take kitty to the vet to make sure it's not something else.

Before you consider buying medicine for your cat's ears... Take the poor thing to the vet to make sure that's what it is.

Do you see black, waxy gunk stuck in her ears?
If you do, then its ear mites.
Ask a vet, or check at your pet suppy store. They have liquid treatments you can use to kill them. Your cat "will" scratch and claw and go nuts when you apply the treatment...
I used to hold mine down and use an alcohol swab to clean the black gunk out of her ears, also...
