if your male cat is not nuetered they roam to find a female to mate with. spay/neuter helps to avoid a lot of behavioral and health problems.

Cats can wander, male and females. I had a female cat that just disappeared. You never really know what happened to it. Maybe it was in an accident or got lost. I had one cat dissappear for 3 days then came back.I also got told that some cats if they are sick and going to die, they may run away and not do it close to home. It's terrible because dogs you can keep them behind gates but cats love to travel.

Well cats are generally independent creatures...keeping them inside all day everyday can sometimes get them fussy (unless they're the lazy kind). They just love adventure and to do cat-ish things (hunt) that an enclosure (house) just wouldn't allow to the fullest. Besides, I've had a LINE of male cats and trust me, like human males (sorry for the stereotype :) )...male cats are waaay too irresponsible to 'look after their brood'. They hate to be tied down. Haha.

They run away because male cats like girl cats. they will wander for miles looking to meet girls. They like having lots of girlfriends, too, so they will wander for a long time.
Sometimes, if they can't steal any food where they are wandering, they will come home, sleep a bit, have a bite to eat, and go back out.
If they don't ever come home, it might mean they met a mean dog, or got lost, or just never got that hungry...

Sadly, the male cats run away looking for a mate. Unless you go and get them nurtured, hope this helped..

un neutered male cats will wander off but they will come back for food... they dont wander off and find new homes unless a new home feeds him and takes him indoors...
however any unfixed male will wander more and wandering makes it more likely he will get in trouble - hit by a car, picked up by annoyed neighbours.. shot... poisoned..
best thing is to try to keep your new cat as an INDOOR only cat...
unfixed males generally dont like kittens - they will even kill them (even their own) to bring the female back into heat)

No, unless they are neutered, they are looking to mate. There is no reason to allow a cat to go outdoors. Once the cat is neutered, he will be fine indoors all the time.

They probably smell a female, getting him neutered will be a good way of preventing this..
