For the last 6month i have had pain in both thumbs mainly my right hand , the pain used to only come when i banged them on the joint or when i try and turn a wingnut or try and pick my laptop up with my fingers and thumbs, which is not easy at all. After a day of work (engineering) my thumb muscles can be quite tender. Problem is in the last few days of total rest my upper thumb joint and the bone from the wrist to the upper thumb joint on my right hand is giving a stinging ache every minute or so and woke me up last night. Right there's the info what do you think.

the big muscles of the thumb appear to me to be quite large but as they both have a problem it's hard to compare. But i feel they are swollen.

It could be over-use of your hands - i.e. repetitive motion causing Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Or....you may have the first signs of rheumatoid arthritis. Do your finger joints look swollen? That would be one sign of RA. Also, it could be tendinitis or regular (osteo) arthritis.

In the short term, a mild painkiller should help. But in the long term you should see your doctor. If it is RA, you'll need medication. And if it's something like Carpel Tunnel or tendinitis, your doctor will probably recommend a wrist brace (or similar) etc.

Since it's lasted 6 months, I'd make that appointment to see a doctor soon. Good luck..

fishin I have never even heard of this process! there are web sights to go to for medical information and it may be listed under prostisis (sorry dont know the spelling) I sure wouldn't think a silicon joint would be painful but recovery very well maybe.

Ask your doctor about an exercise routine. Regular exercise, such as walking three times a week, may reduce neuropathy pain, improve your muscle strength and help control blood sugar levels. Gentle routines such as yoga and tai chi might also help.

On breakfast, go ahead and ingest orange juice. But throughout all of those other day, focus on water rather than juice or soda

Go bland. Plain, easy, unseasoned food such as prepared chicken, plain rice and a nude baked potato are nutritious but your palette will tire of these people quickly, unlike salty moreish ready-made food, which keeps you snacking and piling around the pounds.
