My mom called someone a "*****" and I was appalled... I said that ***** is just like the "n" word. I argued that it is better to call someone black or African-American. Do you agree or disagree?

***** is incredibly outdated. It's not exactly the same as the n-word, but it's not a neutral word either. It's a reminder of pre-civlil rights days and gives the appearance that the person using it isn't very politically correct. Or up-to-date. It's like using "colored" to describe someone. So yes, I would say it's degrading. The times have changed and the way we describe ourselves have as well.

I prefer Black, some people prefer African-American. I don't know anyone that prefers *****.

***** is NOT like the N-word. Big difference. It also depends on the way the person said it. There's nothing wrong with saying someone is black. Also, African American is the PC way which is crap. How many blacks are actually from Africa, born and raised? Hardly any. Unless the person is an actual African and naturalized citizen, do not refer to them as African American. We are all American, black, white Asian, whatever, as long as we're were born and raised or naturalized. Peace!

Your mom used the word *****....because that is the word that was socially acceptable when she was raised.

I've seen my grandfather use the word ni**ger in public and not bat an eye. Meanwhile, I'm getting a bad case of the sweet feet ......anticipating an all out riot. He's well into his 80's.....and doesnt even think about "political correctness". Despite his use of that word, he doesnt indicate that hes racist at all. Its the word he was taught......to describe people of color.

African-American......is wholly inappropriate. Look at the countries that are on the African continent....and its self explanatory. These are American born citizens who happen to have dark skin.

Maybe you can just talk to your mother.....and explain that now days.......people use......black....brown....light brown white.....to describe a persons skin........and it makes you uncomfortable to hear her use the word *****.

Keep in mind that she wont change over night.

If I was black I rather be called a ***** or a ****** than an African American, because Africa is most pathetic excuse of a country or land mass that has "human" inhabitants.
