I cannot now recall whether it was the front or rear plate that was missing. No-one seemed able to give a sensible answer.

Rear plates are required on all cars, no matter the state. 19 of the 50 states only require one plate, the rest require two, front and rear. Keep in mind here each state sets its own rules and regulations regarding vehicle licensing.

Some states require one plate, rear only, and some two - front and rear.

If the rear plate is missing, you have to check the rear window, as "temp plates" are displayed in the window, if you lost the real one, or have bought a new car and need the temp plates until the real ones get to you.

In some states, like Illinois, you are required to have two plates. One on the front and back of the car. There are other states like Indiana where you are only required to have one plate on the rear of the car.

In Illinois if you have a Temp plate (Which is what you have before you get your normal plates from the DMV) then you only have one. It's just a cardboard plate.

I honestly think that you should only need to have one.

Not all States require two license plates. Some only issue one plate and it is mounted on the rear of the vehicle. Some people, illegally, place their plate in the rear window if they don't have a rear plate mounting bracket or it is broken.

some states are a one plate states that would be the reason u would not see there front plate, you always have 2 have a rear plate on unless you just bought the car then they give a temporary plate and u will receive your real plates in about month or less.
