My folks need to get a new TV. They now have a set top freeview box type of thing & still use a Video recorder to record from the TV ( they are in their 80's & a bit behind with technology) If they get a new TV & a DVD player/recorder can they record from the set top box.... someone suggested that you cant.... I'm a bit in the dark with all this myself & dont want them to waste money on the wrong things.... what do they need to get....... they only want simple/basics ????

I have a freeview box with a hard drive I record to and a DVD player plugged in to that - it works. Just connect the DVD output to the DVB box using a SCART lead. The DVB (freeview) box will need 2 SCART sockets - unless it plugs in to the aerial socket of the TV.

If they are still going to use a set top box then I think you need to connect a scart lead in the `out` of the set top box and the `in` on the DVD recorder. Depending on which TV they buy, it may already have the freeview channels in it-ie it is `digital ready`, in which case they won`t need a freeview box but will record on dvd via the lead from the TV to the DVD.

Yes you can, if you set it up so that the recorder goes in between the box and the TV (ie aerial goes into box, then SCART from box into DVD, then another SCART from DVD into TV). You would also need to make sure the recorder is set to record from the "ext" channel.

Another option for them might be a new set-top-box with a built in hard disk, known as a PVR (personal video recorder). This records shows automatically, you just use the built-in programme guide to select the one you want. They're really easy to use. The best thing about them is you don't have to worry about finding a blank tape/disc. I think Thompson do one of these.

Yes they can....my freeview sky box is set to channel 7 on TV so when I want to record I set Sky box electronic programme guide to come and set DVD or video or come on at the same time recording channel 7 for the duration of the programme...Most of the modern Recorders use hard drive rather than tapes or videos....they have a freeview twin turner so you can just click on the programme on the electronic programme guide and it will automatically record..you can also pause live tv...it is all a bit confusing I know for the elderly...it is for me and I am not near 80 yet.....The simplest way is as I said originally, just tune freeview to channel 7 say and then they set video to record that channel when the selected programme is on....hope that helps as I am confused now.

I quite have a freeview container and that i will checklist the channel that i'm watching, which looks somewhat stupid truly. I asked at Currys and that they mentioned i mandatory a seperate freeview container for the video. Then i ought to checklist one channel, while watching yet another channel by way of the different container linked to the television. I even have a twin tuner television and video combi with a freeview container linked, looks truly stupid that i'm no longer able to apply the video now.
