Try this from my italian neighbor. It has onions but if you use a food processor to dice them extra fine, the kids won't know they are there.
1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 28 oz. can tomato puree
1 medium onion, diced very fine
2-3 cloves garlic, chopped or minced fine
4 Tablespoons olive oil
1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup red wine
1 Tablespoon sugar
Saute onions and garlic in oil until almost browning. Add both cans of tomator along with about 1 can of water. Heat to almost boiling and then lower to simmer. Add parsley, salt, pepper and wine. Add more water if needed. Adjust the amounts of salt, pepper and wine according to taste. Cook for at least one hour.
Saute 1 1/2 lbs. of either ground beef or a mix of ground beef, veal and pork. Add to sauce mixture and cook at least one more hour or longer.

Mine wouldn't either for a really long time. Haha! That's why I am the mom : ) I know it sounds nuts, but I was determined to have food that we both liked, so I simply tricked them into loving the flavor. Once they were older (about 6) I showed them how I made it. Needless to say they were shocked.
In a pan I sautee up 1 whole onion, 1/2 red pepper, a few cloves of diced garlic and about 1/2 container of fresh mushrooms with a pinch of salt and pepper until they are soft. Once everything is soft I put it in the food processor. If the veggies are a little dry just add a little olive oil to the food processor. I mean make it mush. It's really nasty looking, just make sure they don't see it.
Next add your meat to the pan. My daughter does not like meat sauce with hamburger, so I use sausage, but it doesn't really matter, just brown the meat. Then add 1 large can each diced, whole and pureed tomatoes. Oh and your veggie mixture. I also like to about 1 tsp. of dried oregano, a pinch of crushed red pepper and about 1/4 c. red wine. But the sauce is good without any of these. Simmer on low for about 1 hour. You can sub the whole tomatoes with diced, I only use whole because my guy loves tomatoes and likes to see big huge chunks in his sauce, and it's easiest enough to avoid them for the kids. Also, I like basil so as I am serving, I add fresh ripped basil on top of mine, but skip it for the kids.
I had to come back and edit I almost forgot the S & P. Each layer should be seasoned well. The meat (unless you are using sausage), tomatoes and veggies.

I'm no food aficionado but use herbs and spices along with the meat sauce. Some salami in spaghetti is good too.
