The local distribution substation receives the power at higher voltage levels. Using transformer, AC voltage level can be easily step down to lower levels that are needed for domestic purposes. Where as in the case of DC changing voltage levels is quite expensive. Hence It is more economical and feasible for distributing AC power. However for transmitting bulk quantities of power over large geographical distances, HVDC is suitable.

One consideration is that if you grab a live DC wire the muscles will contract and you can't let go. AC alternately contracts and relaxes the muscles and is less dangerous. Another problem is that DC voltage is like a constant water pressure and tends to break down insulation along a given path while AC alternately 'pushes' and 'suctions' the electrons that do not carbonize a path through rubber. Of course AC operates transformers and tank circuits (capacitors and reactors or coils of wire) that may be 'tuned' as in a radio. DC battery radios had to simulate AC perhaps with a vibrating reed (like a doorbell). AC can also power induction motors using rotating electromagnetic fields which do not need brushes that arc or wear out. Small (shaded pole) motors in window fans, etc. can stall without burning out. AC can be easily converted (rectified) to DC when needed as in electronic circuits.

Edison was a big proponent of DC power. However, it was determined that the logistics were too much to use it for domestic purposes. The wires had to be very thick and there had to be booster stations every few miles.

Most of the domestic appliances run on alternating current supply. Moreover there are not many agencies engaged in DC distribution.
