The only way to hasten things up is to emerse yourself in it. Eat breathe and sleep thinking about photography. Even then you may find yourself taking longer than you expected. Make sure you get other peoples opinions on things.

It all depends on whether or not you're a fast learner. Some people take years to develop their skills, others pick up a camera and rival Ansel Adams with no training at all.

Workshops are useful, but not always necessary. I read a lot....I have probably 100 books on various aspects of photography. The best thing I can recommend is to learn the basics -- principles of composition, exposure, etc -- and then take your camera out and shoot. Study your pictures, find out what's working and what isn't, and go shoot some more. Learn to see the way your camera sees. Take some more pictures.

Beyond that, there isn't a "Learn to Shoot Like a Pro in 24 Hours" miracle method.

Learning is (or should be) an on-going task. There are few if any shortcuts. The Rolling Stones still rehearse. So yes, as a photographer attending workshops is always an excellent idea.
