If so, what is America like now, compared to them. It seems like a chance to see the 'future'?

LOL!

You make your own future. You can choose this one, or not.

Come and see for yourself.

The average technological advance per household may be an advantage, but personally I don't see the United States as being 30 years ahead. In the last 30 years, we have become more disconnected from each other making society less able to solve there problems without resorting to court.
Sure we have more "stuff", but we are loosing track of what a supportive society is. More cars on the road mean that an 8 lane highway form Orange County California to Los Angles will take you 1.5 hours to drive 37 miles. And if you cut someone off, they might shoot at you.
The Higher and tighter people have to live, seems to make them desire isolation all the more. People become mean in the city, because isolation brings disconnection and an eventual breakdown of society. You can still find small towns where people know each other and talk and enjoy each others company. Where they are welcoming of strangers and ready to be friends, but that is not in the major cities, and certainly not on the state level It seems affluence breeds contempt.

Stay where you are, man. The wimps are in charge here. Everybody is sensitive as little girls. Matter of fact, I might go there. Are you still allowed to speak your mind without some activist group staging a protest? Or filing a lawsuit because some "mean" words made them uncomfortable?

I traveled around Oz for years and loved it, always wanted to live in Queensland, Townsville or Cairns but due to things beyond my control I live in SW Florida.
