Our country used to have a siren go off, every so often, like once in 2 or 3 yrs and it was just a test to let the country know that should your country become under a war attack, that the siren would go off and warn you to go to shelters or take refuge somewhere. It was a country - wide allert to let you know that your country was under attack. We use to practice this drill at school, or your workplace, or even shopping malls. I haven't heard it for at least 10 yrs. Why not???

Those sirens stopped being used in a number of communities in the U.S., effective in 1992. That is when the former Soviet Union, now the Russian Federation, announced a complete stand-down of the old Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces and we did the same. So, the main reason for their existence to warn people of an incoming nuclear attack was no longer valid.
My county still plans on using it to supplement the Emergency Broadcast System for rare events like natural disasters, though they haven't run regular tests since the late 1990s.

Well, the last "Alert Siren" I recall here in Northern California that included an air-raid drill would be about 1975 or so.

SINCE then, the alerts go out over the idiot-box (TV).

It would help to know what country YOU are in.

I am pretty it sure it has been longer than 10 years. I think what you are referring to was the civil defence drills during WWII and shortly afterwards, or more likely the atomic bomb drills back in the 50's and early 60's. At least that is here in the US.

Late 60's was the last I heard one go off when I lived in Norfolk, Va. Cold war is over! People wised up to the fact that if a nuke goes off you have just enought time to kiss your azz goodbye!!

Drills like that stopped in the 60's. Like getting under your desk and covering your head would bo anyhting against a nuke.

It is for Air Raid warning. If there is no air raid, you don't use it. If you've heard the sirens used tornado warnings, then you've heard an air raid siren.
