i recently bought a new laptop with vista home premium installed and I regret it bitterly. It is the most user unfriendly version of windows. Having had windows all the way up from 95 i considered myself fairly conversant with computers but this is impossible. have microsoft shot themselves in the foot this time? Are we users of vista victims of 'friendly fire'?

Thanks to all those who answered. As one respondant said people are disillusioned with Vista - and I count myself among them. Vista just appears too clever for us ordinary mortals and i feel that as such it is like modern cars that have put a lot people off home mechanics. The whole point of previous windows systems was that they were intuitive and people could soon get to grips with them. As word spreads that computers are now useable by enthusiasts/professionals only I think we will see a decline or at least home computers will be used mainly for the more basic applications that people can get their heads round. I don't want to have to learn to fly a jet before i can drive to work.

The question asked is difficult given Microsoft's continued dominance in the software world.

Vista was a shot across Apple's bow in that Vista basically looks like OSX. I think Windows 2000 was the most stable operating system ever developed by Microsoft simply because Windows 2000 was built upon the stability of BSD (once the "UNIX" aspects were removed). Vista was another reinvention of the wheel. Microsoft had over 5-6 years to get Vista right and they failed miserably.

I used a Sony VAIO laptop with Vista for a month or two. While I found a major learning curve to learn new aspects of Vista, I had a difficult time explaining things to my wife almost to the point of wanting to take the laptop home with me because my wife could deal with XP. Neither of us experienced the myriad of complaints seen in this forum and my own Vista curiosity is piqued.

No one is breaking the Microsoft monopoly - at least for the next 5 years.

A similar question to this was asked a while back and this was my answer which I repeat because I think it's just as applicable to your question too:

"Hmmm now that's a very intriguing and interesting question. I have to assume that you are referring to the quality and reliability of Vista as opposed to anything else. As such I'd say that'd be a fair point IF there were a competitor on the horizon waiting to bite Microsoft on the bum. We may see a little bit of fragmentation in the market in the future as people turn away from Windows, but it won't be anything to write home about. Apple have shown that their main business now lies away from the Mac and Linux will never be a Windows killer in the foreseeable future. There are a few replies that suggest the bugs and flaws with Vista will be addressed in Vista SP1 but I personally would doubt this. I think we are looking much further down the line to get things right. XP SP3 is in testing now and that is 6 years after the release of XP. I do think Microsoft should be concerned because people are really disillusioned with Vista but alternatively I don't think they've got anything to worry about."

Vista is way better than XP. In the first six months, XP had 60+ security holes while Vista only had 20+ security holes. I can play all games including those made for Windows 95 without any problems. Only need to modify some compatibility settings such as setting compatibility mode and run as an administrator. Interface much better and easier to use. Microsoft is currently developing on Windows "Seven"(Codename for next major OS).

A new operation system! ARGH?! Look at this thing! It takes up too much hard drive space. I have to go out and buy more memory for it to even RUN, and it's WAY slower than the last one. Now some of my programs won't run, and half of my hardware doesn't work with it!

Anyone remember saying that when Windows 95 first came out? Wierd Al even did a song about it.

Adapting to new technology is a challenge that is always going to be with us. You just wait and see. before long, XP will have gone the way of the dinosaur and everyone will be mad at Microsoft for their latest OS, and saying that they would rather stick with their trusty old Vistas. Yea, it's a pain at first, but if you never change with the tides, you'd still be using Windows 3.1 right? I think Vista is very user friendly once you learn your way around it, and I haven't thrown much at her that she can't take. Oh sure, there's a couple of hardware problems. My webcam won't work on Vista, but as old and cheap as my webcam is, I'm surprised it even works on XP!

Just give her some time.

I don't think vista is the end of microsoft, I think vista has the potential to be 1000 times better than XP SP2, I just think microsoft released vista too early and have stumbled on more glitches than they had expected.
Microsoft is going to be around for a long time yet.

Vista seems to be a love or hate type thing.

Looking at the article linked below, it would appear not "Microsoft's quarterly profits rise 23 per cent".

IT'S ACTUALLY THE END OF THE BEGINNING i.e., NOW M-SOFT WILL RISE HIGH AFTER THIS LAUNCH. SO, KEEP WONDERING ABOUT THE HEIGHTS!! AND VISTA IS A GOOD OS IF YOU TAKE SOME TIME TO LEARN IT AND PLS DON'T PREFER 512MB RAMS FOR VISTA. OPT FOR 1024MB RAMS.

Not the end, but certainly enough to make people look at the alternatives. Unbuntu or Linux for example.
