generally, power consumption varies with the level of audio OUTPUT. The process of getting to an audio signal consumes little power relative to the audio amplifier/output section.
if the unit produces a higher wattage (power) output it will take in more watts to do that, as in driving larger speakers.
If you run it at a loud (high output) volume setting it will consume more power to satisfy you.

They use more power because they have more work to do converting the digital signal back to audio output, and that takes more power. You need to decide if the improved quality of sound from DAB radio is worth the extra power consumption cost.

thats not true in my case,i have a dab radio,perhaps its one of those larger ones,they can use up a lot of power because of the size of the speaker.

i think it's because they have to de-modulate (convert) the signal a lot more then a normal radio has to do.
