Silas is great! I have a friend who just named her son Silas.
If Caleb, Levi and Nathaniel are big (34 and 135, 69 - without considering variant spellings), then Silas can't be far behind.
Pretentious and middle class, you fear? Name trends filter down. 15 years ago, Emma was a name used by a growing bunch of highly educated, literary types, many with plenty of cash. Now it is holding steady at #2. Caleb made the same kind of trip, though less dramatically.
Silas was #817 in 1992; #600 in 2000; #453 in 2003 and #373 last year. It will probably continue its creep towards the more popular names, putting your son comfortably ahead of the curve.

RE:
Deciding on the name for a baby - is Silas a bit middle class and pretentious?
I love it, but my partner is worried that it's a bit too posh-sounding for a kid. Just thought we'd get a straw poll of opinions!
thanks

I had a friend whose name was Silas & he requested the nickname "Chip" instead. That's what this name reminds me of.
I don't think that it's too posh-sounding though. As a kid, he may want something a bit less formal, in which case, there are nicknames to be made. No problem!

Silas isn't bad and certainly not pretentious. Something like Edward George the Third would be pretentious to me.
Go with it if you like it!

I love the name Silas. I'd use it for my son however, it doesn't go at all with our last name.

To be honest it does sound a bit pretentious - as if you are consciously trying to be different. I always think that you have to put it in the child's perspective - he will have to explain and live with that name and peoples' reactions to that name day after day. My advice is to choose something that is not too out there unless you want to make a statement and you will definitely be doing that if you call him Silas. There have been many times when I have had a little chuckle when I have heard a parent call out their child's name in a shop and it sounds ridiculous. If you have any doubts about the name don't go for it.
