If your out with colleagues it is bound to come up at some time. If out with non colleagues I never ask that question,"what do you do for a living" Asking it can open the flood gates of a long boring evening. Sometimes it is a good opener when you have met a person that is a little shy and finds it hard to talk to strangers. It puts them on safe ground with a subject they are comfortable with. One does need to know how to stem this flow and change to more interesting subjects.

I do - but friends find it annoying sometimes.
I would say it depends on who you are socialising with. It would be weird not to ask and tell how everything is at work when you're with close friends - Just don't overdo it.

I try not to - conversation is a two-way street - and I prefer to keep to topics that the other person is actually interested in! I may mention some work related incidents from time to time. If the other person wants to know more, then he/she will ask.

Work is one of the most enjoyable topic to talk about at gatherings..of course this will depend to your crowd..if you are in buch of losers and you are an achiever, so better not, you might just end up as a villain in a party, but why not. it can be good too, to give inspiration to others, to enhance their knowledege on the skills of having a job...and how to be a good achiever..so it is just a matter how to share topics on jobs at socializing...........for me, I wouldnt mind it at all, and I don't care if others talk about theirs too, i am all ears...

I talk about work sometimes with friends, but only because we're all young and stupid and have nothing better to do than to try to understand every single possible facet of the real world since we're about to be thrust into it prematurely.

Try not too. But if its going to help my bread and butter become tastier , I would do this any day. Depending on the ones who are interested to hear all about my work and all I do.

When I was in the army, we had a rule. If anyone brought up work or the military, he had to buy the next round of drinks.

I try not to but I usually have someone ask me about something medically wrong with them or people will want to show me something like a "growth" on them and ask my opinion. But it is what it is and I do what I do. So there ya have it. Btw, I'm a nurse, not a doctor or anything great like that............lol

I try not to.
My wife always tells me not to talk about my work.
Then somebody says, 'And what do you do for a living'
Then when I get home I get told off for talking about work.
So I tell her ' next time somebody asks me I'll tell them to mind their own business'
You cant win can you?
