The reason was, "the cleansing/homogenization of Anatolia, of all non-Muslim, non-Turkish elements"...which leaves Christian Assyrians, Greeks..and the biggest of the population, the Armenians.

Partially religious, the Armenians were Christian, the Ottomans Islamic. Also because some Armenians supported Russia at the outset of WW1. Russia nad Turkey were bitter enemies at that time.
