Isn't a Liberal environment minister an odd thing. They have denied climate change for 10 years, decided it's not in the economy's best interest to do anything about, they didn't want to sign Koyoto, sorry yes they did, sorry again, no they didn't. They allowed the Pulp mill, defy Freedom of Information (FOI) laws to allow access to a study in the Great Barrier Reef being released before the election because it's so bad!

I now understand what a Liberal Environment Minister does!!

They makes sure the environment doesn't get in the road of big business and the economy. Has there ever been a more pointless position in a Liberal government.

Yes, it is a bit of a *foxymoron*
Whenever an Aussie liberal is proposing "clean energy" they are of course just referring to nuclear+uranium mining+big business interests+short term economic pragmatism+bottom dollar+whatever spin it takes to get it .
It's rather hard to be convinced of the pros of nuclear versus the cons when the proponents of the pros are coming from that angle.

Anyone who gives approval to anything so environmentally damaging as a Pulp Mill in Tasmania doesn't deserve to be the Environment minister. Where are they going to get the materials from for the mill. Not renewable forests that is sure. No wonder we are having climate change like we are-no trees. If the mill goes ahead then we will have less. Bad move! Bad minister!

Actually the Liberals used to be the leaders in protecting the environment. They were greener than the greens, because they believed in boosting the economy thru the environment!

Unfortunately that was all chucked out the window when Howard took office.

A few years ago the former enviro minister Robert Hill negotiated a spectatular Kyoto deal for Australia. It was to be his finest triumph! We were all about to sign up... then Howard chucked it in the bin. Robert Hill eventually resigned in dismay.

As soon as Howard goes, Turnbull will ratify Kyoto.

Yeh Surfa Money talks real big even to get a supposedly job that makes it look like your doing something but actually doing nothing at all .

I agree with a lot the answers here about he pulp mill, Tasmania had better stand up and count the trees unless you wish to look like Easter Island with no trees at all. Vote against the pulp mill an put someone who actually cares about what is happening to this planet of our an it's is a very fragile one at the moment.

Hell Surfa, You are so wrong. Mal is the Man of the Moment. He is a little Shy and is very sensitive. Not about the Environment, but about his wish to become the next PM.He has stabbed his Loyal Leader in the back more times than Downer has put stockings on. Costello has a Smirk but Turnbull has something worse, He has a plan for Australia. Do they give refunds on Canoes rented in Oz if I wish to paddle one way to New Zealand? Turnbull is that ---Bull.

yeah, i have to agree. i think the whole concept of the environment portfolio, at present, is to manage it in economic terms. i actually can't think of any environmental legislation of the current government which hasn't had a financial implication. even those solar-power rebates were sold back to us under budget reforms! it's like saying 'you know what, the economy's good- we can give a little back to shut up the greenies'.

(do you happen to read a fairfax newspaper? they're utterly indignant about FoI laws, i've been following their columns for the last few months & can't believe the amount of documents that are inaccessible to the public. it's somewhat hilarious actually.)

Now Dick remember the warning you gave me the other night bout MT just because he has a good set of whiltshire knives at disposal is no reason not to show him some respect but to the question at hand I can't exactly figure out what he does except sit in his office sharpening his knives maybe he should be the minister for knife sharpening

Yep, strange eh!
So much for Howard announcing not so long ago that he was an "climate change sceptic".
I was up at the reef a few weeks ago and it is a mess !
Didn't the US want to drill for oil up there?
Mal is in it for himself, all he wants is the big job, stuff the one he now has.
