Pollution enters ponds by two main sources. Surface runoff of water and rain fall. Rain is polluted by particles in the air. To prevent air pollution we all need to drive cleaner running cars and use fewer fossil fuels.

Surface runoff contains anything that we humans put in the earth. Fertilizers, waste, garbage, pesticides. Therefore to reduce the amount of those things getting in a pong we have to reduce the use if fertilizers and pesticides. Perhaps growing things organically and using biological controls for pest would help.

You can tell when a pond is getting polluted. It will produce algae. However, there is not much you can do to control the runoff of water. Most ponds are filled by surface runoff. If you suspect your source of pollution is people living in the watershed above the pond. You might try talking with them, attempt to get them to use less of what is causing the algae blooms.
