Why are some " super massive " black holes larger than others ?

A black hole becomes larger when its mass increases. When it becomes more massive, it can attract farther away.

So some " super massive " black holes are larger than others because:
1) There was more matter near them where they were born.
2) They are older, they had more time to attract their neighborhood and to get massive.
