Some info states that a safe alternative to using bleach in your laundry is using vinegar. I have really dirty laundry (kids, dogs, etc.) Will vinegar really get things clean (i.e.kill bacteria) as well as bleach does?

Bleach or non chlorine bleach is the best bet for thorough cleaning. If you are concerned about smells, I have heard that vinegar helps, but it didn't do much for the mildew in my towels. I ended up using non-chlorine bleach and after a half hour soak and wash they no longer smelt like mildew.

That is my understanding. I went on search on the internet once, askeing the question for an alternative to bleach, came up vinegar. Of course, you will also need to properly use the regular amount of laundry soap with it.
Also, On the vinegar thing--in case you know anyone who has had a lice problem, according to what I read about vinegar, it helps to remove the nits from the hair. Cuts thru the gumming part of them hanging on to hair.
Take care.

Bleach is natural and safe way to clean out and disinfect both laundry and counter tops.

Vinegar is not a disinfectant. Use bleach for whites or Lysol for colored clothes.

Vinegar will cut soap but it will not kill germs/bacteria.
