I have ceiling fans in every room except the bathrooms and the kitchen. They help to keep the room temperature even from top to bottom. When you run an air conditioner with out the celing fans the rooms will be like an open top freezer at the supermarket. The cold falls directly to the floor and the hot air rises to the ceiling. If you are sitting ina chair your feet will be cold and your face will be comfortable. If you are standing up and working you face will be hot and your feet cold. With ceiling fans running all of the time the temperature will be the same all over so the air conditioner will not run as much and you will be more comfortable at a warmer setting. The fans only use about 30-60 watts apiece

That could be a matter of opion. Most ceiling fans have a switch on them which enables you to change the direction the paddles(blades)are rotating. One direction will force the air current downward, while the other(opposite)draws the air upward. So in this respect a ceiling fan does double duty by pushing hot air away from the ceiling or pulling cool air towards the ceiling. Good luck.

They are both fairly cheap, except that some ceiling fans can cost hundreds depending on how fancy you want them. The biggest advantage I see with the plug in ones is that you can move it around where ever you want it. With ceiling fans you'd need one in every room and that's not too practical.

it depends on your situation, size of room needed cooling, and people in it. overhead fan for big room with maybe lots of people, plug in fan if its by yourself, with the breeze directly on you.
