Evil Dead.. still the best.
The exorcist comes a close second.

My favorite "scene" of a horror movie - not the whole movie - is the opening scene of "Jaws". When the girl is first bitten, and then driven thru the water, pulled under, comes up and then the shark pushes her to a buoy and lets go,then comes back and takes her for another ride - her screaming piteously with no one to hear her - and on, and on; then she's pulled under for the last time, and it's breath takingly quiet, with the stars shining as if everything is great with God's good world, was utterly shattering for me. Not to mention the sharks tail's rhythmic beat, back and forth. Masterful. I can watch - just that part, the opening - over and over again.
As to an entire film? I think the original, first "Frankenstein" and again the first and original "Halloween" would be my picks. Two other cinematic masterpieces.

"Alien" is a horror movie??!! I never categorise it under this, no wonder I was scared. (To me "Alien" is under sci-fi)
No favourite as I avoid watching movies that are termed horror : O but I watched "Shining", I think, by Jack Nicolson. right? Again, I categorise it under thriller, so I did not avoided it hmmmmmm

I hate horror movies and I think the whole concept of wanting to scare yourself to be dysfunctional.
