When I was having incredible financial difficulties back in my late 20s, I received a small box delivered by a messenger service. The box contained $5,000 in $20 bills, with a note to not tell anyone about this gift -- specifically, to not try to find out who had sent it. [It was kind of like the Dickens novel "Great Expectations."] The note also implored me to similarly help others anonymously throughout my life. Twenty years later, and in much better financial circumstances, I routinely contribute anonymously to deserving organizations -- and I've sent a few cash "care packages" to others, although I'm unable to be as generous as the one I received.
Being benevolent anonymously makes you feel wonderful. Because no one can thank you for it -- which would drag ego-stroking into the mix -- it's one of the most purely good things one can do.

My parents have been pretty good to me, but you know you never appreciate things your parents do for you until they're gone or long after the fact, which is why I'm much nicer to them these days. They helped me and my ex finance a car, arranged to put a mobile home in their park for me when I moved back from Virginia, still give me free lot rent. I pay for the home, though. My mom didn't like babysitting, but she'd help with my daughter when she was little and sick because I was a single parent. I guess I had it rough so I didn't realize how much they did help. So I guess my point after rambling is APPRECIATE your parents.

My ex-boyfriend and his family helped put me through school. Gave me a place to stay while I was in school and everything. Great people. I still talk with them from time to time, even though my ex and I are both married to other people now.

I am an only child but grew up with my cousins who are all older. They were great to me, like having older siblings without having to live with them. When they all got married I made sure to be just as good to their kids. One day I overheard them saying that they would be proud if their kids grew up to be like me.

i have three very close friends who got me to realise that i was in a relationship that was VERY bad for me. looking back on it now...they probably saved my life. it makes me sad to think that i resented them for a long time because of it. but now i love them and they still love me and it's all good!
