I would like to know if there is a special way to do it or if you just stick a piece of paper on the back

You can buy them at any petstore or local aquarium shop. They have all sizes and varieties to meet your need. If you are artistict, you could be creative and make your own. I have just used regular poster board and have sometimes painted the backround on.
I have used different types of tape to attach mine to the back of the aquarium.

You can buy a back ground at the fish store if you want but i just use bristol board or scrap booking paper because it is cheaper and I prefer the look of it ,what ever you get just tape it on the back.

They sell backgrounds at most pet stores. You get the back outside of the aquarium wet and then press it on, using a small squeegie to get out all the air bubbles.

From your local aquarium store, there should be a range of background of sea scenes that you can buy, all you have to do is put them on the back of the glass.

you just stick them to the back of the tank, mine used to always fall off though once the weather got hot.
