A manual is just what it implies. You have to do all the shifting. It's a general pain in the butt. Automatics are far better. They cause less wear and tear on the car and the driver. Some people have this stupid impression that a stick is faster. In most cases it;'s not. You friends car bouncing is just one of the signs of a person who can't drive a stick. Buy the stick car,but after the novelty of it wears off you wish you had the automatic. One other thing on most cars an automatic trans hold their value better than a stick does. Why because the general public whats nothing to do with a stick.

Manuals are better. your brother's car bounces because he is not that good at modulating the clutch pedal.
Some say that for drag racing a turbo car with an auto is better because it doesn't loose the boost between shifts.
That could mean tenths of a second in your 1/4 mile time. But if you are just driving around (basically this car is not ONLY for racing) than a stick shift is the best option.
Just learn to feel the clutch and you can make a stick shift actually smoother than an auto. And they are soooo much more fun.
Added later:
'Just Me' is wrong. If you like to drive get a stick shift, if you like to ride along, buy an auto. There is no novelty. A stick shift is what makes driving great! Even my airhead girlfriend, who drove an Auto for the past seven years loves to drive stick, now that she has learned.
As far as learning on a stick or driving it too hard:
The manual trans is much stronger than the auto in most cases. And clutches and motor mounts are designed to withstand the extra forces exerted by the stick shift. Especially when learning

a 5-speed, commonly called a stick shift is ALWAYS the better choice. Sure, it's a hassle, but it's MUCH more expensive to replace/rebuild an automatic transmission when compared to replacing a clutch.
Speaking as a fellow Evo driver (mine's an Evo 3) your brother needs to quit riding the clutch before he shreds it. And with the stock Evo 7-9 clutch, it doesn't take much!

for the bouncing, the key there is driving ability, not the car. A good driver can make most any stick shift car shift smoothly. For driving under most conditions, I prefer a stick, but an auto is much nicer for stop and go traffic, because your left leg doesn't wear out from constantly working the clutch. Figure out how much time you spend in stop and go traffic and decide if you want to spend that much time screwing with a clutch, and you have your answer.

The difference...... a manual you shift all the time, an automatic the transmission does all the shifting......
what is better..... they are the same.... it is your preference, I prefer an automatic..... maybe im lazy ;)
If your brothers car jumps when he shift he is letting the clutch pedal out too fast..... he needs to practice driving a manual.....
