Back in ancient times before humans thought up the bible, or religion for that matter, Males were more valuable in a family than females. If a female was first born it was usually killed at birth, as humanity evolved though humans became more compassionate and kept their daughers, through infancy and childhood but since female children couldn't hunt, or fight their use was of little value to the family. So, fathers began offering land, livestock, money, in order to entice men to be interested in the daughter and take her off her father's hands, therefore making room for another male child. Marriages were civi unions between the father and the new husband in the beginning, until women started to have a say in their own destinies.

And contrary to what Brian M says, there is nothing in the bible or history for that matter that says Adam and Eve were married...in fact most of what is said about their relationship could be interepreted as siblings.
