This Wikipedia site provides a fairly detailed synopsis for each MM film that might help guide people through some of the confusing spots.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Myers_(Halloween)

The reason there are so many rough spots is that John Carpenter meant there to be only one "Halloween". After its success, he was badgered into doing "Halloween II". For "Halloween III", he thought he would get away from the formula, but it failed to find an audience. He was stuck with doing the series. You see, Laurie was not written as Michael's sister; those scenes were added to the network showings of "Halloween" to sort of prepare the way. With Laurie as his sister, Michael had a reason in returning to Haddonfield, Illinois. (Yea, Illinois!)

So, this wasn't a series that had a grand plan. They seem to have made a lot of it up as they went along. For example, they killed off Jamie then resurrected her with another name. They also threw in a niece to give Michael reason to continue his rampage.

Poor John Carpenter... He created a Frankenstein, as the saying goes. Actually, I guess Michael Myers is his Frankenstein's Monster.

Not at all. The original is the only one worth watching. Its jumps around too much after the first one.

After the second movie, I am pretty much confused by the rest of the series.
