Right now I'm reading The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins, which could accurately have been named Evolutionary Biology for Dummies. I'd call it more of a defense than an explanation. For an explanation, The Origin of Species is probably the way to go.

Origin of Species was written by Darwin. and there are many books which will explain this theory which mordern science refutes.
Just to cheer up:
A to B: Why are u so sad? It appears that our ancestors were monkeys when I look at U.
B to A: It appears that we are still monkeys when I look at u.

Irving Stone is known for his fictional biography. Keeping in mind that he wrote fiction based on thorough research, you might find The Origin interesting and helpful. It gives background to all of his research and tells the reception it received.

Since Darwin's seminal work was called "The Origin Of Species" one would figure he would come up with the origin, wouldn't you? Not so. I wouldn't put too much "faith" into Darwin's theories.
