You should never call a child a name, and especially never label them a negative term such as "stupid." Of course, even parents and grown-ups make mistakes, so I'm sure it happens.

The thing I remind myself as a parent is to make sure that I am addressing negative behavior, instead of attacking the child. It's okay to label the child's "behavior" as stupid. As in, "Driving drunk was really stupid!" "Going out in the rain without a coat was a stupid thing to do."

It's very important to make sure that you never label the child, but rather attack the negative behavior. Make sure the child knows that he has a choice of selecting the appropriate behavior and there are consequences of their behavior.

No. That is not something you should do. You should never refer to a child as anything that would cause them to feel inferior or worthless. Things you say leave impressions and saying hurtful things can be very traumatic for a child as well as cause them issues down the road. Never use the word you when refering them to something or talking to them. Such as you are bad or you need to go on a diet. Treat your child or anyone for that matter the way you would want to be treated. Your influence now determines who and what they will be later on in life. Never be negative. Talk with them, teach them and support them. They will love you for it and most likely will grow to be a wonderful individual.

by no potential, ever. little ones don't be conscious of while the discern is kidding or being serious. And maximum little ones might think of they actually do think of they're stupid. So then, they might bypass by way of existence questioning they're because of fact they have been called that. Encouraging a toddler receives them plenty farther in existence.

HELL NO!!
Why in Gods name do people think that it is okay to say things like that to a child? If the child does something wrong, or makes a mistake, you teach them how to use the experience as a lesson, so they do not make the same choice twice. People who feel it is okay to talk to their children like that should have been neutered at birth. If there only was a way to tell at that age.

No, it's not right.
But in the real world.... I have been known to call a few people "stupid". They really have to be idiots for me to do that. It's not a very nice word. (Never kids!)
I guess your parents don't know you as well as us. I would never call you such a name!

Not in a million years

My wife calls my kids ignorant sometimes when they interrupt her on the phone and I freaking hate it....although to be fair I don't think she takes the word in the same way I do

I tell her that "rude" is a better term

But calling a kid stupid is just downright mental abuse

Never. but here's (ONLY) one little execptions that's not bad:

for example: a kid smashes all the windows in the house, the parent: "how could you be so stupid?"

what they mean, why would you do such a senseless thing! (not bluntly and hurfully calling them stupid. once i had a teacher who actually called me stupid in 5th grade... not in a joke way, but seriously. it was very hurtfual, and i know how it felt.)

NO. It will eventually take its toll on his self-esteem. Kids look up to their parents a lot, and they always think we're right. So if you keep saying that to your child, he would believe that he's really dumb and no matter how society uplifts his confidence, it wouldn't do so much. Kids really believe their parents so much even if at times they do not admit it.
