Well an all time classic Halloween "trick" is to have a bar of soap with you, and write whatever comes to mind on their windows with it, of course, doing so in a manner so you dont get caught. This is even fun to do to the "scrooges" who turn off all their lights to avoid trick or treaters. The soap will show up pretty easily for all who pass by to read, and other than a little character loss, it is harmless to the victim because it washes right off.
I have not heard of anyone doing the soap trick for a long time, but my grandparents told me this was done alot when my parents were kids. I did it and it's alot of fun. Hee hee...

When I was a kid trick or treating, I avoided the houses where the "mean" and the unenthusiastic the following years.
But if that happens again just say "That's a bit rude, please be thankful I've been polite to you." If that doesn't work, follow the guy at the top's advice and say "At least I could take my mask off."
