Obviously you can't change the physical size of your hard drive. The only way to add more is either change to a bigger hard drive or add an external hard drive, they're quite cheap now.

You can't unless your C drive is a partition. If that's the case you can "steal" space from another partition - however it's still a zero sum exercise (you still have the same physical space).
You can also compress files. Go to www.download.com and search for compression utilities. Zip accompanies many OS installs. Again, you're not adding space, you're just using the space you have more efficiently.
There are also cleanup utilities. They remove temporary files, cookies, clear your recycle bin, etc. Go to download.com or sorceforge.net. I use McAfee, it has a utility to do this but it's part of their security package (subscription based service - $$$)... Again, this is not adding disk space just using it more efficiently.
You could also add a second hard drive and virtually add the drive but it's so inefficient that you might as well make your new HD your primary (C) drive and use your old HD as a secondary/backup storage.
Another method, similar to the above is to add a hard drive and go to manager and add the new hard drive as a folder in your C drive. This however is just a "trick" but really doesn't do anything for your C drive. It just masks the second drive.

Well I don't know if you'll get 5GB but you can remove any old programs and data you no longer need, de-frag your machine, use CCleaner to clean up temp files, use the registry part to clean out old or bad registry errors. Remove unused programs from the start up menu. you might want to use a USB flash drive if you want to store more data. Honestly nothing short of a bigger hard drive will get you a lot of hard drive space. If you so low in space you might want to consider getting a hard drive with more capacity and/or just add a second hard drive which will instantly give you more space!

get ccleaner and run it in cleaner mode and reg cleaner mode then uninstall programs you never use (if you never play the deer huning game then why have it take up space?) get a usb hard drive and put any big files (iso images video files) and move them to there. and get a compression program i prefer winrar but there are many others (if all else fails) backup all your files and reinstall windows, when it asks uncheck all the system componets you dont need (solitare, paint, stuffs like that)
