Not always that much......one should look at there work history, and contact past employers instead..even though by law they can only tell you so much..

It really depends on the professional degree of the job. If you are applying for a more professional job, like sat a database administrator, then yes and they check all of them. If you are applying to work at McDonalds then no.

When I was working all we could say was the date they started and when they left. Basically confirming they worked there. Afraid of lawsuit if you made a negative comment and it wasn't properly documented.
