2 3/4 = x/4
In order to get x, you take the whole number (2) multiply it by the denominator of the fraction (4) and then and the numerator (3). Afterwards, you just put it over the original denominator.
2*4+3=x
x=11

As for your other question, 13/3=__ 1/3, it would be 13/3=4 1/3. You would just find how many times the denominator (3) goes into the numerator (13). 3 can go into 13 four times with one left over. The number of times the denominator can go into the numerator is then the whole number, and the number left over goes over the original denominator (3) and becomes the fraction. Therefore, 13/3=4 1/3.

The explanation was a bit confusing, but I hope it helps.

a)

2 3/4 is nothing but adding 2 and 3/4

so 2 3/4 =

2 + 3/4

make the denominators equal by multiplying with 4/4

8/4 + 3/4 = 11/4

b)

13/3

divide 13 by 3 , you will get 4 as quotient and 1 as remainder

so 13/3 = 4 1/3

In other words write 13 as multiple of 3 and remainder

so 13/3 =

(12 + 1)/3

=> 12/3 + 1/3

=> 4 + 1/3

=>4 1/3
