There were many gunfighters in the old west with a fast draw. If they didn't have a fast draw they would get shot down in a gunfight. I have no idea who the first one was. Probably a nobody that was never well known.

The "fast draw" gunfight was a creation of dime store novels, and later Hollywood, and was not really part of the old west. It's a very romantic idea, but most gunfighters who lived were not dumb enough to walk out into the street and face someone down. Watch "Unforgiven" with Clint Eastwood if you want a more realistic picture of gunfights in the old west.

Interesting note: The mythical gunfight is really a projection forward of the earlier traditions of jousting and dueling. At one time, gentlemen did settle disputes by armed combat. In medieval times, they would don armour and exchange lances. In later times, through the 1800s at least, gentlemen would challenge each other to a duel. That was truly an act of bravery and many people lost their lives. You'd have a hard time finding someone in the old west who lived by the gentlemen's creed, however.

Most real gunfighters were not fast draw - that is a fictional and modern creation. Gun fights were duels with draw and shoot until someone hit or shooting people in the back or front when catching them unaware (walk into the bar with the gun out, shoot the guy at the bar) Remember that fast draw shooters today are not at risk for death - which would make them more nervous.

Buffalo Bill was one of the earliest and most well known for sure...even when other GF's went to the new cartridges he continued using powder with balls....he was known to have cleaned his pistols every morning and reloaded them to make sure he had fresh powder in them...it paid off more than once when the other guy misfired.
