I don't believe reverse has a sync. That is why you need to be stopped before you put it in reverse. It sounds like the linkage is out of adjustment. One of the linkage arms may be bent. I have had this happen before in an '85 F-150 of my brothers. All I did was bend the linkage so it would push the lever further and it worked fine from there on. I would definately try this before I spent all the money for a rebuild becauseI just don't think it needs it.

Wzzd is right. Reverse doesn't have a sycro and even if it did, a bad sycro wouldn't make it jump back out of gear. If it sits there and grinds, and, if it is a three speed, it's likely the linkage is trying to get it in gear but can't reach far enough. If you have a four speed it could be a bent shifting fork or the fork has moved on the rail.

The 5.4 does no longer have a timing belt because the cams are chain pushed and if the chain broke the engine would not run and ought to have bent valves. i ought to guess the different posters are spectacular, that a spark plug has come loose or blown itself out of the threads. If a sparkplug has certainly blown itself out the threads contained in the cylinder head can might want to be repaired and this may cost some money. wish this facilitates!

time for a rebuild. Alternatively, just kick it, but then you would need repair.
