oh my god, i'm a first-semester sophomore in college. i have to declare my major by march. so i have no opportunity to take any more classes before i choose a major!! please help me! i am in a state of panic. i like psychology but it will get me nowhere according to all of the questions asked on here about salaries and psychology majors. i am definitely going to grad school for something, so would it matter if i majored in psychology and then went to grad school for a high-paying career? i just don't know what to do! i know economics is stable, but the classes are boring. i'm too afraid my grades would suffer and then i really wouldn't get into grad school. someone please help me, i am crying right now out of panic :((((((

If you know you are going to graduate school, I think you can absolutely major in psychology and then move on from there. Even if you don't stay in that field in graduate school, if you go into management or marketing or many other fields, the psychology studies you completed may help/be related to the studies and work you eventually do. You're right, economics would be a "logical" good choice, but if you aren't interested,

Don't panic, anyway.

Do you have an academic advisor you can speak with? And/or career counseling? Maybe you can get some interesting additional information/perspective to help you with this...

Don't major in something you hate... you're just setting yourself up to hate your job, which is (depending on how much you work) forty hours of your life each week. Do something you like. Do you really want to be rich and miserable?

I mean, maybe you do. Who knows. I've found that I care a lot less about money than most people.

also, I have never tried to get into grad school, but I believe if you major in psych in undergrad, you can still go to grad school for something completely different. I haven't declared my (undergrad) major yet, and people keep telling me it doesn't really matter as long as I have a Bachelors in something.

If you like the psychology, take that. You can always change later on and there is no sense making a lot of money and being unhappy. When it comes time to look for someone to spend the rest of your life with the psychology may come i handy. Just don't panic and stop crying because life will go on whatever choice you make Good Luck to you!!

I am sure you can declare a major with your college and continue taking classes and then change it later on. People change majors all the time, it isn't a big deal. Don't worry about it! Just declare a major and figure out what you really want to do. Good luck and breathe!!!

I have read some litterature about panic attacks. But they allways seem to have a more scientific approach and that is nothing I need in my struggle to survive those horrible panic attacks. This is a "hand on" and very practical book. I felt it was written to me. I am sure that you are going to feel the same.

Joe Barry writes exactly how I think. The examples are perfectly described. And the method is genius. I recommend this book and thanks Joe Barry for writing it. It changes your life

YES! CRY! CRY!

haha, kidding. do what you like. if you worry only about money you're going to end up in a job that you don't like.
there's a lot you can do with psychology, counselors, human resources, psychologist, and i'm sure there's a lot more that i wont list. just because you major in something doesn't mean that you're stuck doing something in the field for the rest of your life. it's jsut what you learned about in college. you can always learn stuff about other jobs later. for now, do what interests you and STOP CRYING

Give you a tip from the working world.......

(interview)

Hi, I'm Tom... you are? (insert name here). Hi (name), welcome to the interview for Box n Jox company. Did you go to college? (you) Yes. That's good (name), can you work......

All biz really cares about... were you able to survive the 4 yrs, get a piece of paper and make it through it all. Yes? then you are hired. As college is nothing more than prepping you for how the work world works.

Non stop, always going, always juggling. And that is what you learn in college. How to juggle classes, time, time off, work, relationship, etc. Its just prep for life.

Meaning, all you need is a degree, not really what its for. Talk to most in business today. They do not work in field their major was for. I went for engineering... today I am an artist on cars. Figure that out lol.

My sister went for fashion, design and business, today she is a paramedic.

Take some deep breaths and calm down.

Spend some time sitting in a quiet room with a chalk board or white board. Write down what you're feeling and what you're anxious about. what your goal and priorities are. The answers will come to you.

Really, do what you want. I go to Kettering in flint Michigan, we have a co-op program there, so I know what it's like to get into a job you don't like, and I also know what it's like to get into a job you like. Do what you want, you should be fine in Psychology.
