What will medical schools look for and how do they decide?

The key factors affecting acceptance to medical school include the following:

* Successful completion of required undergraduate courses
* Grade point average
* Performance on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
* Extracurricular activities—especially those reflecting public or health-related service, volunteer work, and other evidence of your initiative
* Letters of recommendation from undergraduate health professions advisors and faculty members as well as physicians and other members of the health professions, community leaders, and other individuals who have employed you or supervised your volunteer experience
* Interviews with medical school admissions committees.

Is getting into medical school as tough as they say?

No question about it—medical schools are looking for the finest minds and the most motivated students who have a strong and demonstrated interest in working with people. It takes a special type of person to even dream of a career in medicine, and it takes hard work and commitment to make it to medical school. Today, only one-half of those who apply are accepted. ---> What this means is that for every 10 students who apply to medical school, 5 will be rejected!

First of all, I think you should consider improving your English substantially. Try to work hard in your math classes as you are a bit behind- you should work to take Calculus very soon. Along that, try to take as many Physics, Biology, and Chemistry classes as possible; these are the classes you get tested on in the MCAT.
If you truly, truly desire to get into medical school, I'd suggest you try taking summer courses to get further ahead in your studies.

Medical school admission is TOUGH. Make sure you work VERY diligently during the next few years.
Oh, and one more thing: I'd really consider in your case to apply to medical school outside of the U.S. It's so difficult to make it in, but if you consider applying in a different country, you could really raise your chances of becoming a doctor.

actually cara, last time I checked, rejection rates in the USA are around 85 to 90 percent. Meaning that only 10-15 percent of applicants get into med schools. And for good programs, only 7 percent get in. Med school in the US is really difficult, if you fail here, you can always apply abroad and take the certification exam.

A woman who married a doctor once told me this years ago. "watch out for girls that hang around the med schools, they are not loOKing for love, they are looking for a man that will make a lot of money" She said this then said the reason she knows, she was one of them. I would just not tell girls what you do, just say you are in school. You could say nursing that will turn away a lot of me money grubbers. Regardless of who you end up with you will have to tell her sooner or later what you are really going to school for, then she will be ok with that and she will more than likely love you for who you are. The fact is some women want a man that will be there for them and be able to spend time with them, others just want money. Just watch out and choose wisely.

People from other countries are great at being American doctors. I would just take some English classes before you try med school. Good Luck : )

I think you can do anything you put your mind to, completing medical school will be a long hard road. Just stick with it and utilize your resources. Work on your English skills as much as possible.

It doesn't matter what 'we' think. What matters is what you think. Are you willing to "pay the price", to do whatever it takes to become academically qualified to get into medical school?
