It depends on how long you want to spend in the US. If you want the Southern US I would recommend you see Savannah GA thought by many to be the most beautiful city in the US. I would also consider seeing some small cities in SOuth Carolina and along the coast in North Carolina and Virginia. These areas are very beautiful and completely different from the New England areas. If you have plenty of time I would try to see both. You will be fascinated by the differences between the New England and Southern areas.

Dependent on your desires in hotels/motels or bed&breakfast/boarding houses you can expect to pay from $45 to $125 per night for average accomodations. Usually as you travel through the different areas of the states you can pick up booklets at restaurants and gasoline stations along the main highways with discounts at the hotels/motels along the way. You will generally find the north eastern US to have a higher cost for lodging and food but gasoline is generally similar across the country.

Currently, it may not be the best time for Georgia as they are in a severe drought.

If you are looking for a quaint drive, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire should definitely suffice. Those three states are absolutely beautiful. Some small, wonderful towns are Kennebunkport, Maine, and Manchester, Vermont. I live in Colorado, and just visited New England this summer. Motels can be as cheap as $70 or $80 a night; if you are looking for something a bit more expensive, you can probably find a nice bed and breakfast (New England has hundreds) for about $150 a night. Although you want to stay away from big cities, I strongly encourage you to travel to Newport, Rhode Island. Fascinating, quaint, small city with TONS of American history and some of the largest mansions in the United States right alongside the ocean. I loved all of New England, but Newport just amazed me. I hope that helps, and hope you enjoy your vacation to the United States.

Maine,New Hampshire and Vermont are really nice with " quaint Americana" style towns. Summer and fall are high season in these areas so book in advance. There are lots of B and B's in the areas that are historic, as well as hotel chains. Not sure of the rates though. Check with the local toursim sites for these states.

There is a great little town in Penn called New Hope. It is just across a cute little bridge from Princeton NJ, also an interesting place. New Hope has a quirky occult subculture and some basement music stores where you will find things you never knew you always wanted. Tons of trees, great people watching....need I say more?
