From early childhood I have had intense fear that wells up and sabotages my efforts by attacking my drive and confidence. I have tried to deal with it in the past by 1. seeking refuge in laughter and 2. willpower, but willpower will take you only so far when resisting a force like this in the long term and when dealing with others in a 'forced' way. Does anyone have any insights that might help me to lose this fear?

Low self of steam is in many people. No confidence is quite common. Laughing things off is great, all you need to know is that not one person can judge another, no one has that right.
This is a saying of mine.
Flaws collectively in one person makes them perfect, a person with no flaws is one big flaw, imperfect, there for if you deny one flaw you deny your unique perfection.

Your flaws make you human, without them you would be an alien freak. lol
If you still need help try a therapist, friends to tell you how great you are helps, do what your best at and people will give positive comments on what you do if your good at it. Positive feed back always boosts confidence.

Fear is your "flaw" my "flaw" and every ones "flaw" if it were a flaw. Fear makes you, me, and all human. Though animals have fear too, not like humans do. We all are not confident, but ignoring others who wish to put us down does keep what little confidence we have from going away.

Best of luck to you I know what you are going through it doesn't change you just get better at coping with it and, or ignoring it. Though those things are bad to do.

Can you remember what could have happened back there
that is still haunting you today? Maybe you were traumatized
at a very young age. This fear could be stemming from your
childhood. You could be having severe panic attacks. These
attacks along with anxiety can scare you almost to death
and make you want to stay away from anyone while you are
feeling this way instead of forcing yourself to act differently
when you can't. This type of fear can be very scary. It can take
everything away from you. It would really help to get to the
source of this terrible fear before it ruins your life any longer.
A good therapist could untangle this and prescribe the right
medication. The medication will allow your mind to rest and
ease this fear so you can get your feelings across to the
therapist. You may not remember everything from your past
but your subconscious does and hopefully you will find the
answers you need so you can live a happier existence. Don't
feel that you are the only one who has felt this kind of overpowering and crippling fear. I admire your courage to
talk about it . Don't give up! Keep fighting and conquer these
feelings! I know you are stronger than the forces of fear
that are attacking you.

well buddy u didnt told us wat are the things fear u most.

but still as a suggestion i will suggest dont go for the 1st way dont seek ur refuge in the shelter of laugher this way u are fooling u , u are tryin to run away.
If u want to overcome that then u need to face it and this is the place where ur willpower comes in the play. have confidence in urself dont let it go. start up by facing the small fears at first and while facing them BELIEVE urself that u can overcome.

Dont let the fear overcome u, u can keep telling to urself that its nothin i can do it or something positive like this and dont push urself too far at the begining but as the time passes u will be more confident and better to face ur fear.

"Fear grows in darkness; if you think there's a bogeyman around, turn on the light."
and here u light is ur confidence and ur willpower

i think this will help dude and be fearless

Aristotle said that we are what we repeatedly do. this is how bad habits get entrenched. This is also the foundation of most practical therapy.
your condition may be relieved by sensitivity therapy. Treat the fear in it's most minor case and build from there. as you form confidence dealing with the fear in its minor condition, you can build the intensity until you have reached a functional success to your targeted satisfaction.
You can devise your own therapy or get professional help to develop a therapy suitable to the fear. In either case, you should have someone you trust monitor your success. It keeps us honest and give an outside opinion to gage if our progress is being made or if the therapy needs adjustment.
I will suggest that professional help will bring more insight into your particular dilemma, as the stimulae is early in your youth and its development in your life may be more involved than you might initially realize.

This may be strange, but my suggestion is to embrace it. By trying to suppress your fear, you are expending mental energy you can use to deal with the situation.

In my work I have to present to large groups on a regular basis. I always feel nervous about it, but have learned to simply accept that I have fear, accept that it's a natural part of my personality and proceed as best I can on-the-less.

Use anger! I'm afraid of violent men. I have my reasons. What ever it is. Spiders, whatever. I'll tell you what, I'm just as scary in the dark as anyone I've ever met.

The more you expose yourself to something the more your fear fades.
