I remember arround 1998 or 1999, in Irvine California, seeing a asteriod on fire flying through the sky going east in Orang County int eh middle of the day. It looked like a rocket but it was in fire. Its been so long but i cant get it out of my head, it was one of the weirdest things i have ever seen. It must have hit somewhere east of Irvine maybe in Riverside. I wonder if it was on the news or if anyone else saw it? Im gonna try and google it and see if anything comes up.

I have had the privilege of seeing two fireballs. BTW, it wasn't an asteriod. A large fiery streak, visible in broad daylight, can be caused by something no larger than a basketball. And what you are seeing is over a hundred miles up. Maybe you can find a record of it. Less impressive data is on the Internet.

Also, there have been some of these which never hit the ground. Two reasons: they burn all the way up before reaching the ground, or they actually skip off of the atmosphere and fly off into space. At certain speeds, this is quite possible.

most asteroids or meteoroids that enter the atmosphere burn up before they hit the ground. i saw one once in chicago traveling east and burning with green fire. this was sometime around the early 1950's.
