Shoes with a pattern, what kind of outfit?

I have a pair of Steve Madden shoes that have a houndstooth design on them, is it ok to wear an outfit that also has a pattern (like stripes)? Or should I stick with only only one or the other?

Choices with houndstooth:
1] wear with all solids
2] wear with a pattern of the same colors [ if shoes are black/tan, outfit should have black/tan it its' stripes, plaid, etc.]
