I've read everywhere that they're supposed to be very active fish, but all they do is sit in the corner together (I have four) and stare at my kitchen. They will swim to the top to eat if I get their attention by putting my hand close to the side of the tank, but that's the only time they ever leave the corner. Am I doing something wrong?

The water stays between 78 and 80 degrees, I feed them tropical flakes twice a day, and the only chemicals I've added are "Stress Coat" and "Cycle".

Need more info for a good answer, but the first thing I would do is to lower the water temp to 72 degrees. If the tank is in a room that stays at a fairly stable temperature year round, get rid of the aq. heater. They are only good for malfunctioning and boiling your fish. Depending upon what other fish you have , salt is needed for sword-tails. Talk to your fish store about how much, etc.
