Also, is it neccessary to have the thermostat replaced when getting your radiator flushed? I live in the DC Metro Area & would like to know of any good radiator shops in the area.

If it looks dirty flush it out and replace it. Also, ALWAYS use distilled water to mix w/ antifreeze if you aren't buying premix (which is a waste of money anyway) The distilled water won't have minerals in it to clog up the cooling system over time. You can buy a flush and fill kit at most parts stores made by prestone. It's also a good idea to add water pump lubricant if you can find it anywhere when you do this.

ANYONE FLUSHING YOUR RADIATOR is just taking your money. If its clogged then send it to a radiator shop and have it rodded out. these days rodding a radiator isnt possible because of the way the tanks are made.Replacing a radiator is the only option. Flushing your coolling system will wash out the rust inhibitors put in the block from the factory. You might drain the fluid and replace it but dont allow anyone to flush it.

Open the radiator cap when the engine is cool to see if it is rusty colored. But you should do it at least once a year. Most oil change places will do it

If you'd have entered the year make and model of your car I could be very specific. Unfortunately I'm going to need to poke and guess.
Actually, this should be done every three yrs. even though the installed antifreeze says to change it every 150,000 miles. Check in the glove compartment manual and find in the specification page the type of antifreeze your car should have. Gm is having problems with a heavy brown sludge build up in their motors with cast iron blocks. Dexcool antifreeze is being blamed for this. I can't buy it as I've seen plenty of aluminum steel sleeve motors which are slick and clean with Dexcool in the cooling systems. In my opinion the GM Motors' problems happen because the antifreeze level isn't maintained in the coolant recovery bottle. When air enters the GM cooling system casting sand and flashing inside the block and heads react with the Dexcool to plug up heater cores and change the color if the normally orange clean antifreeze to a brown mess. We've had to repeatedly two part powder acid clean several times these GM engines clean.
