I'm going to upgrade my old phone, by buying a new UNLOCKED phone for myself for Christmas. My 2 year contract with AT&T (formerly Cingular) runs out in March. Can I continue service with them after March at the same price, even if I don't renew the contract? Will I have to threaten them with switching to T Mobile? How will this work?

You can continue to use their service at the same rates without having to renew a contract. Since you're buying an unlocked phone, you don't even have to tell them you got a new one, just take the SIM out, and put it in the new phone - no problems (unless you have phone trouble, they wont deal with it because you didn't buy it from them).

The only reason your contract would be brought up is if you buy a phone from them at a 2 year contract (discounted) price - locking you in for another 2 years, or it's even possible to buy from them at the full price with no contract extension, but they will stress that you get an extension so you don't "spend so much" on the phone.

yes......yes......and yes!!!

this is the only way to do it!!!

If you have your own unlocked GMS cellphone your are free to choose!!! this the only way I do it....but sadly to say we don't have much of a choice in the US....you only have ATT and T-Mobile...get your own sims card....you don't need a contract...but you will see some raised eyebrows when you go to the Store....!

The only reason we all use 2 year contracts anyway is, no one want to fork over the money for an GMS unlocked cellphone.....!

Most ppl goes totally nuts when they see a great cellphone for only 39 dollars, but have to sign a 2 year contract....I only done it once with Cingular....there after never again....!

but remember, be tough when you go to the Store....

They only reason you got a contract is because you got a "free" phone. You can continue using your existing service with any phone you want.

They don't do service without contracts. They just don't. Switch if you want, but T-Mobile doesn't either. That's one reason why the GoPhone and TracFone were so popular: no contracts.
