I recently bought a betta & 2.5 gallon tank which I filled with Bottled water. This is my first aquarium and betta and not sure what I should and should not do. I am going to be using bottled water again too.

I have had varied replies to my question which confuses me more. I do have a whisper micro filter in this Mini Bow 2.5 aquarium. I still have not changed the water yet. Do I rinse the filter off, do I remove the betta from the tank and is it ok to use bottled spring water? The tap water I have here has a strong chemical smell to it so I am afraid to use it.

Also, do I clean the plastic plants and gravel in the tank?

Last question do I need to do water testing on the water. Hope someone can help me with these issues. :)

Forget bottled or distilled water, Fish need some of the minerals in tap water.....just not chlorine. You didn't mention if you had a filter or not. A filtered tank of Bettas can go with only 1/2 water change a month. I sell Betta tanks with UG filters. The tanks are 18,24,and 36 inches long, 5 inches wide, and 5 inches tall, Glass partitions are every 4 inches. You just siphon off about 1.5 inches every few weeks and pour in water of the same temperature. I keep buckets filled so the water will be the same in the tanks as it is in the buckets.

You do not have to use bottled water for your fish. Buy Start Right from the pet store or wal mart and read the directions. Fill your tank, add the Start Right and let it set for 24 hours before you put in your fish. When you clean your tank only take out 25% and use the Start Right in the water u use to replace the old. Since you just aquied this tank you should wash everything except the rocks with dish soap and rinse very well. The rocks you only have to rinse the exsess dust off of. Good Luck!

Unless your tap water is really bad, it should be fine, we use the chlorine removing drops.
You have put the fish in the water already I assume and it's doing well.
Betas are pretty hardy, watch the pH and water temperature. Also be careful what other fish you put in the tank with them. Some are compatible, some are not. Especially other betas.
It's a fun and rewarding hobby. We had two 55 gal tanks at one time.
We got out of the hobby because the proper care was too time consuming. A little tank like yours shouldn't be any trouble at all.
Have fun.

You generally should try to avoid doing a 100% water change, as there are certain beneficial bacteria and nitrate levels that develop over time in aquarium water. The stress of the 100% new water environment will weaken the fish's immune system and stress him/her out.

If your aquarium has a filter, you should be OK doing infrequent partial water changes.

When cleaning Betta fish tank:
1. Take out Betta with scooper and put it in a smaller container filled with water(DO NOT CLOSE THE CONTAINER)
2. Dump out all of the water and rocks.
3. Put rocks on paper towel
4. Scrub aquarium clean
5. Scrub again
6. Wash rocks twice
7. Put rocks back in
8. Refil the aquarium with tap water (It's better for it)
9. Using the scooper put the fish back into the aquarium
10. Wash the aqaurium every week

Good luck!

Save 10% of the old water and something from the tank that has not been cleaned and add it to the cleaned tank. Your don't want to completely eliminate the beneficial bacteria that your fish wants.

you can use regular water if you get some plastic milk jugs, and fill them at least 24 hours in advance, then use it for the fish. You only need to change the water when it becomes a bit cloudy, and then you should also wash the rocks, etc.

I used to let the water sit over night in another bowl on the counter, over night before changing half the water. I totally forget why, but I don't think you are supposed to clean them 100 percent. If you do, they sell special additives that you can put in the water...it makes bubbles and airates it a little. Its just a tablet. I got them at Walmart. Good luck.

I have one too, and it`s 1 year old. And, I always use bottle water. You should change the water each 15 days. And each, one or two months you have to wash the tank and all that you use to decorate with white vinegar, and to wash with bottle water to clear the vinegar.

only change 25% of the water if it's filtered once a week with a gravel siphon, don't take out your betta

if it's not filtered, you need do do partial waterchanges of 50% every other day, to keep him safe
replace it with conditioned water

Hope that helps
Good luck
