The fascination of the vampire is primarily a sexual power-trip.
Fictional vampires get to visit people in their bedrooms, lie with them and bite them, and suck the life from them, without any emotional involvement. Vampires can fly, they can move about like mist and shadows, the only responsibilities they have are to themselves and their hunger. Vampires have amazing strength, they can hypnotize and control, they're pretty nearly invulnerable to standard weapons.
And, not to belabor the idea, a major appeal for the vampire wanna-be is that they can stay up all night and not have to go to school in the morning.

Vampires have been gifted (by writers and movie makers) with the most seductive image ever given to any character in the horror genre.
Women love them because they are dark, mysterious and romantic (not in the flowers and candy sense, thank you), wild and reckless (they're immortal so that can afford to be). Indeed they won't be able to show off their heavenly physique on the beach, but why would they, when they would rather be either in the nightclub of your dreams, living the good (and sexy life) or by the fire place with a glass of wine (or is that blood?) as old as themselves, contemplating the endless opportunity of an eternal life, or looking over his library / collection of historical treasure. Sure, he's hunted by the slayers, but they'll die off eventually. And its not the fact that they have to drink the blood that it so fascinating, its how they seduce they prey for it. See why vampires are loved so much by the women?
And for the men who are so fascinated by vampires, its the danger, mystery and women (that are as aggressive and desperate as the slayers, though contact with them is much for fun)
The line must be drawn when people are fascinated to the point that they believe they are real. They are part of human fantasy, which is why they have evolved from icky corpses to one of the most seductive creatures in imagination.

Of all the monsters, made up in movies or part of actual folklore, Vampires are often portrayed as the most intelligent and alluring. Vampires are usually given a higher status among monsters, rising above others like Werewolves, Zombies, and even the all-time classic, The Frankenstein Monster. Yes, the transformation from human to Vampire is as horrible as that of a Werewolf or Zombie, but once complete there is seemingly unbridled power at your finger tips for a very long time. I admit, if Vampires and the endless power that Vampires are supposed to have actually do exist, I would be drawed to it for a moment. But, for myself, it is the passion for eating real food that keeps me from ever wanting to be a Vampire. Instead, if I were to be bitten by Werewolf, at least I could still eat meat (LOL)!

The simplest explanation is simply the chance for life after death. Sadly, this does not apply. What you must understand, like all folktales from times of yore (sp?), the stories have been romanticized. Originally, a vampire did not look like Tom Cruise, but was a bloated squishy corpse that had coagulated blood oozing out from all it's orifices (mmm, kiss that hotty, ladies!). Like all things in the western world, we've Disneyfied the ugly and horrid, and replaced it with flowery pictures. I personally believe that this isn't such a good thing, as we, as Americans, never truly grasp the ugly truth of things. We simply blame being poor on being lazy, or assume that all criminals belong in jail. It tends to leave things black and white, with no shades of grey, which isn't real. It causes us to ignore the ugly, or blame it away. Global warming, genocide in Darfur, etc. Hope this helps.

Intro: there are things worse than death. I think it's morbid, sick and deviant. I think some people just like to fantasize about what they could do if they had no boundaries, no social rules of life. When you believe that you must be empathetic and treat others the way you want to be treated, vampire-like behavior is suicidal, because you would have to suck out your own blood. I believe a lot of really mentally ill people are fascinated by this social no no.

I personally would not want to be one...for the reasons you stated. I bet that type of "life" would be far worst than death. There are so many people with so many opinions and wants and differences. The human race is a very, very, very, very, very (I think you get the point) scary and dangerous one.....so to answer the question: WHO KNOWS!! Now, mind you, I don't discriminate against others wants and wishes.

It's an inescapable title that not all of us long to have.
I really don't mind though. I am what I am and if ever see my other answers, then you will understand.
it does have a major downside.
I cannot be in the sun too long, people shy away from me automatically, etc.etc.

it's the power. the sexual attraction. it's being above the law and also you have to understand the people that become fascinated with them to understand why they are fascinated with them.
