Both of these people are right. Dialysis involves diffusion usually of someones blood through a dialysis bag. The bag acts like a filter, as blood diffuses through it, particles that are not supposed to be in your blood like wastes get filtered or are not able to pass through the bag and back into the body. Diffusion is just the general term for the movement of particles in a solution from one side of some type of membrane to another, while osmosis is more specific to water and its movement from one side to the other. One thing to note about water is that it follows dissolved particles. That's why when you are thirsty, the remedy is to drink water. It follows the salt and helps you flush it out by sweating if your hot or urinating. Dialysis is often used for people with bad kidneys who are probably on a waiting list for a transplant. Unfortunately, this mechanical method is not as effective as a healthy kidney.
