I saw a documentary on TV about Papua New Guinea and it seems as the people was black. I thought that you needed to be from African descents to qualify. How would the US census bureau classify them?

They range in colour from dark brown to black, depending on where in PNG they come from, as do those that live in the Indonesian province of West New Guinea.

No, you do not need to come from Africa to have black skin. Indigenous Hawaiians are dark brown, as are Tahitians who they are related to. Tongans, New Zealand Maori and other Polynesians are dark brown to black. Indonesians, depending on where in the archipelago, are dark brown to light black.
Native Americans and Eskimos are dark brown.

No need to wonder love @MedTq367^^, our history is hidden. If traditional historians admit that Africans set sail long before Christopher Columbus they would have to admit that history in general (especially black history) is lied about and hidden. We weren't "having rock fights with baboons" as the old joke used to go. We had many great civilizations that in fact changed the world.

They have darker skin than I do but lighter skin than people from Bougainville and the Solomon Islands who call people from PNG "red men". They came originally from Asia but needed boats to cross to New Guinea as it has not been connected to Asia for many millions of years.

We are a complex multi-cultural people of over 800 ethnic tribes. The bulk of the people are indigenous people classed as Papuans and Trans-New Guineans who are mostly brown to dark brown with Bouganvilleans being dark brown to black skinned. The others are classed as Austronesians who are mostly coastal people; they are light brown. These are probably cross-breeds with Asians and are similar to tribes in indonesia (Maluku etc).

They were a great sea faring people that sailed from Africa early on to places like PNG and Fiji. Some of them mixed with Asians to form the Polynesians. "Poly"=mixed.
